Genesis Maternity Clinic endorses Doulas. The word ‘doula’, pronounced ‘dooh-la’ – is a Greek word meaning ‘handmaiden or caregiver’. A doula offers emotional and physical support to a woman and her partner before, during and after childbirth. The role of the birth doula encompasses the non-medical aspects of care during childbirth. Doulas are trained and experienced in childbirth, while they have a good knowledge and awareness of the birth process, a doula does not support the mother in a medical role. That is the job of the midwife, or obstetrician. A doulas help is a valuable addition to the birth team. Your birth support team are the people you will rely on to get you through your toughest, most intense moments. Doulas are trained in the art of birth support, and have a keen eye and intuition on what a labouring mother needs.
We recommend talking to your midwife for a list of doulas she has worked with. It is important to connect with your doula and feel like you can trust her. She will be with you during one of the most intimate and vulnerable times in your life, so your comfort with her is vital.

"It’s time to put women’s needs, feelings, and intuition back in the center of the birth process. Women are the rock-stars of birth; professionals are the backup singers.”
Pregnancy, birth, babies and breastfeeding are my passions in life. The way I perceived birth was revealed to me when I sat in on a talk and video about water birth and cried as a “reborn” throughout! I knew then from that moment on, without any doubt, that birth can be a life changing experience and something a couple can activity participate in, rather than just something that you have to suffer through and get done. I did my doula training in with Village Doulas in 2008 and Mama Bamba in 2013. I keep current by attending births at various hospitals, birth clinics and homes, attending workshops and courses and interacting with care providers and researching every moment I get, as well as listening to my most willing teachers - my clients and their babies.

"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength."
In 2002 I read an article about doulas and I really felt it was something I could do. The seed had been planted and began to germinate. In 2004 I left my corporate job and became a doula. I have never regretted my decision and have never looked back. Over the years I have learnt so much from the birthing process, the parents and each individual baby. They have all taught me that there is no right way – just their way. My aim has always been to empower the parents with knowledge that they need for the birth process and to build confidence in their abilities to labour and birth the way they wish to. My greatest joy is seeing a happy family taking their first confident steps into parenthood.

"I am passionate about helping women create the right space and environment for birthing and facilitating babies to participate in their own birth experience."
By learning how to tune into our deeper needs during pregnancy, and intuiting the needs of our babies, we can birth in the best way for ourselves and our babies, whether that be a homebirth, a medical-led birth or a Caesarian. Every type of birth can be healing and empowering if the mother is given the opportunity to stick to at least some of what she really needs – even in births where circumstances seem to carry women beyond their expectations (i.e. a homebirth ending up as a Caesar) – if a mother is listened to and given the opportunity to communicate throughout, then she can still come out of any birth feeling a wonderful sense of achievement. A doula helps a woman communicate her needs during the intensity of labour and birth.
Brought up by missionary parents in a very isolated environment in Central Africa, I was attended my first brith when I was eight years old. Birth is in my blood. The “barefoot midwife”, the name given to village midwives in rural areas around the globe. Villagers would fetch me to sit in on the village births. I also worked in mission hospitals during school holidays. And so I watched how women birthed in their homes, and I watched how women birthed in the hospitals. I saw that when a woman breathes deeply, she births easily. When a woman squats or is on her hands and knees, moves freely, she is open to birth successfully. I observed that mothers who were in a sacred birthing space with mostly women companions, who moved and made deep sounds without inhibitions and were given all the time they needed, birthed differently from women who were on their backs on hospital beds in the presence of machines and strangers. I was drawn to teaching pregnancy yoga, as it is a wonderful tool to learn birthing breath and movements, and to settle into that knowing when to be still and relax within intensity. It has been the perfect compliment to my work as a doula.I have had four unmedicated home births.

"If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it."
I have been helping family and friends labour and birth for about 17 years and never had a title. The third birth I had with a family member with the same midwife eventually pulled me aside after the birth and wanted me to look into been a Doula, a very new word many years ago but I did and completely fell in Love with the Concept. Helping more women and families labour and birth, and every single one is different and unique. I did my course with Sacred Heart and started working part-time at Genesis Clinic and fell even more in love with this idea of Empowering Expectant families and Birthing their way. I myself have had a Natural Water Birth with Sue King many years ago and then had 2 Caesars 10 years later. I have been blessed to have experience both having my family around while I laboured and birth and then been in a room and feeling overwhelmed which ended in a Caesar. I am extremely passionate about Breastfeeding as well and believe that the support needed is very necessary and limited in many Health Institutions

“Giving birth can be the most empowering experience of a lifetime – an initiation into a new dimension of mind-body awareness.”
Having had an affinity and curiosity about pregnancy, birth and babies since early childhood, Theoni attended her first birth as a friend of the mother in 1994. After the mother birthed her baby beautifully Theoni was in awe of this sacred and huge moment in time.
This initiated the journey of formally becoming a Doula, her passion and ongoing training allowing her to become a highly sought after Doula and Birth Keeper today.
Over the last 2 decades she has attended hundreds of different kinds of births in all its variations: Home births, hospital births and Caesarean sections. Some of these were wonderful, all going to plan, but some took unusual turns, always stimulating her ability to hold the space for the Mother, Father and Baby.
Today she continues to prepare and assist women and their partners for the transformation of becoming parents, using her wide expertise in Hypnobirthing, NLP, being a Pregnancy Yoga and Moms and Babes Yoga teacher, as well as her body work experience as a qualified Kahuna massage and Craniosacral therapist.

"It's not pain, it's the power of a woman."
When I started working at Genesis Clinic in 2009 I never thought I would fall in love with supporting pregnant women during their labour and birth as my position by then was a Head of House Keeping. Being exposed to seeing highly pregnant women and newborn babies created a love to offer more than just checking if their rooms and meals fitted the standard. I decided to do a Doula training and I added with to this an advanced First Aid Course, as I was advised to do, by the Genesis Clinic matron. I started working as a Doula from 2014 and I really have no regrets about my choice as I get compliments from all my patients and even invites to attend the babies birth days! Being a Doula is more like a calling to me, the joy to see parents share a tear of joy after receiving their newborn baby encourages me to deliver more quality service.

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."
I have always been passionate about babies and birth. I prefer the more holistic approach to pregnancy, birth and post-partum care and therefore chose to study through Childbirth International. I started studying to be a doula after my firstborn little girls' birth. She very sadly passed away during labour, but I was blessed to birth her gently into this world at home with my midwife, doula and mom by my side. It was a really beautiful birth experience and we got to spend so much time with her. I have subsequently had a little rainbow boy - my little miracle! I thoroughly enjoy helping moms-to-be make informed decisions about their birthing options and seeing how empowered they become when given all the facts without bias. I believe that birth is a normal physiological process and an important journey in a mother and father's life.
I worked with the notorious midwife - 'Sue King' for the past 3 years as her assistant and attended numerous births with her as a doula. I have also completed Midwife - Jacky Bloemraad-de Boer's 'Advanced Doula Training', as well as doing rebozzo and cupping workshops. I have also attended Midwife - Ruth Ehrhardt's Helping babies breathe course.

"Pregnancy, labour and birth begins with the unknown but ends with the unforgettable. "
After the birth of my son who is now 10 years old I felt something was missing from my birth process. And that's when I started volunteering at Rahima moosa mother and child hospital. Then I went onto completing my doula course so that I could assist mom's on a more professional level and also offer more to them. Since then I've never looked back! I am certified with DOSA/ training at Sacred space and I have been practising as a Doula for eight years.

"If a woman doesn't look like a Goddess during labour, then someone isn't treating her right."
I am a WOMBS Qualified Birth Doula and a Mum of one. I qualified in 2012 as an International (ITEC) Aromatherapist and Reflexologist, and had a huge passion for pregnancy, labour and birth. After the birth of my daughter I realised how important a Doula is, and how aromatherapy and massage comes into play in the birthing world. I was extremely excited to venture down my two chosen paths and holistically join them into one. I believe that birth is something we, as women, were designed to do, naturally. I believe that it’s empowering and emotional. It’s an experience that as a woman, belongs only to you. The Mom needs to be educated and informed because we don’t give birth, she does. We are a team to assist her and guide her. I also believe that there is a place for homeopathics, alternative practices and modern day medicine in pregnancy, labour and birth but there is a time and place and a reason for each. And lastly, I believe in your Birth wish list and will do everything I can to make this journey special and to not only birth a baby, but to birth a Mom and Dad. I am also an internationally qualified Aromatherapist and reflexologist specialising in Pregnancy and baby massage

Benefits of Doula
A doula is trained in labour and childbirth and provides continuous support to a labouring mother. Her focus is tending to and helping the mom and supporting the relationship of the labouring couple. Doulas support labouring women by:
- Providing continuous emotional and physical support
- Giving information if asked and helping the mother find resources to research her birth choices before labour
- Using comfort measures like massage, suggesting different positions and helping with relaxation breathing
- Accommodating the mother’s wishes for the birth environment (low light, soft music, etc) in the place of birth
- Encouraging the mother to be informed about any procedures and interventions (a doula does NOT give medical advice or interfere with the midwife/mother relationship)
- Supporting the father/partner in the best way to support the mother. A doula never replaces the very important role of the father/partner and a doula will help the birth partner by suggesting ways that he can support the labouring mom and things that can improve their synergy in labour.
If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it. ~ John H. Kennell, MD
*A Cochrane review published in 2012 found that in labours with the continuous presence of a doula, labouring mothers experienced:
- 28% less likely to have a caesarean section.
- 31% less likely to use of induction.
- 12% increase in the likelihood of a vaginal birth.
- 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery.
- 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively.
