To ensure an effortless entry into starting antenatal care with us, continue with the important information as to how to go about booking your birth at Genesis Maternity Clinic.
We are a low-risk facility, which means that you can only birth at Genesis Maternity Clinic if you are having a normal, healthy pregnancy. You will need to confirm your pregnancy with an ultrasound scan at approximately week 8 of your pregnancy, (unless you have already done a scan). Most pregnant women are low-risk for complications for pregnancy and birth. This means you are a good candidate to birth at Genesis Maternity Clinic.
If you are currently with another care provider, and would like to transfer to Genesis Maternity Clinic, please provide your medical records for the midwife to review. This is a simple request for a transfer of medical records via email or hard copy from the other practice. You may not continue your back-up care with the current gynaecologist/obstetrician unless they are affiliated with Genesis Maternity Clinic and on our list of OBGYN's.

Choosing a midwife for your maternity care and birth at Genesis Maternity Clinic
You will need to choose to have your antenatal consultations and birth with either an independent midwife in private practice or the staff in-house midwives. You will need to have had your first antenatal consultation/check-up with either the Independent Midwife of your choice, or the Staff Midwives before you can book into Genesis Maternity Clinic, this is so she can assess you as having a low risk pregnancy, so you can continue your antenatal care and to birth at Genesis Clinic. Antenatal consultations usually get booked from week 16 of pregnancy.
What is the difference between choosing to birth with an Independent Midwife or the Staff Midwives?
Choosing to birth with an Independent Midwife
Genesis Maternity Clinic is a base for a host of Independent Midwives. An Independent Midwife works in her own private practice, with birthing rights at Genesis Maternity Clinic. She will be your main caregiver for your antenatal consultations, birth of your baby as well as providing postnatal care and support. Choosing an Independent Midwife is based on contacting a few midwives, so you can find someone with whom you connect with and grow a relationship with throughout your maternity care and for the birth of your baby. Independent Midwives also offer a more one-on-one care in that she will be the one person you go to for all your antenatal consultations and will be your midwife at the birth of your baby. Please note that their rates are charged separately from the Genesis facility fees as they are in private practice. You can contact the Independent Midwives from their details on our website and set up a meeting with them to see if they are a good fit for you. Our "Meet the Independent Midwife" Info Sessions offer clients the opportunity to meet a few of the Independent Midwives. This gives expectant parents the chance to meet and greet and enquire about their practice and rates. Please note though, that due to their schedules we cannot predict if they can attend ahead of time, as their first priory is to be with a their client if she is birthing. You can view the upcoming info tour dates for the "Meet the Independent Midwives" Info Sessions here. To view the contact details of the Independent Midwives, please view here.
Choosing to birth with the Genesis Staff /In-House Midwives
When you choose to birth with the Genesis Staff/In-House Midwives on duty, one of the appointed will provide antenatal care throughout your pregnancy and a Staff Midwife on duty will assist you with the labour and birth of your baby. When you choose the Staff/In-House Midwives you will not be able to choose a specific midwife, as the Staff/In-House Midwife on duty on the day of your antenatal consultation or the day that you labour and birth, will be available to assist you. Our Genesis Staff/In-House Midwives are qualified medical professionals who provide supportive and comprehensive antenatal care to low risk pregnant women. To enquire more about this service and to view the clinic, we advise you book for a Tour, you may view the dates here. To make a booking with the Genesis Staff/In-House Midwives, please view here.
We do not do elective caesareans, however moms can enquire if they are a suitable VBAC candidate, (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean), after only one previous caesarean, to see if they meet the criteria for a VBAC birth. You must use the services of an independent midwife if you have had a previous caesarean.
If you are currently with another caregiver, you can change over to midwifery-led care at any stage of your pregnancy, (not later than week 35 for Staff/ In-House midwives and depending on availability and requirements if you choose an Independent Midwife.) The obstetrician must be affiliated with Genesis Maternity Clinic to be your back-up.
Scheduled antenatal consultations with a Midwife
- Monthly consultations stating from 16 weeks until approximately 28 weeks. (Some Independent Midwives like to start your care earlier).
- Bi-weekly from week 28 to week 36.
- Weekly from week 36 to birth.
- More frequent visits are available at any time for any reason. Your due date at 40 (+) weeks is really more of a due “zone”.
- You could give birth anytime from 37 weeks up to 42 weeks.
- First time moms often give birth closer to 41 weeks.
Scheduled antenatal consultations with an Obstetrician/ OBGYN
You will have approximately two antenatal consultations with a Genesis affiliated Obstetrician. Your Obstetrician is also your surgeon in case a caesarean section is needed, this procedure will be done at our on-site state-of-the-art operating theatre. Our team of medical professionals are always on standby, in case of an emergency. Obstetrician fees must be settled directly with the obstetrician and the anaesthetist. The fee for the Paediatrician is included in the deposit for non-medical aid patients, and if you are on a medical aid, the paediatrician will require an upfront cash payment and you can claim from your medical aid after the birth of your baby. If you are transferring from another practice/caregiver
If you are currently with another care provider, and would like to transfer to Genesis Maternity Clinic, you must be able to provide your medical records for the midwife to review. This is a simple request for a transfer of medical records via email or hard copy from the other practice. You may not continue your back-up care with the current gynaecologist/obstetrician unless they are affiliated with Genesis Clinic. The obstetrician must have birthing rights at Genesis Clinic.
If you are past 32+ weeks pregnant
The midwives prefer to start your antenatal care from about week 16 after you have had your scan and that you have a low-risk pregnancy. However, we have a lot of clients who transfer to Genesis Maternity Clinic from as late as week 34. You would need to continue your antenatal care with either an Independent Midwife. If you choose the Staff/In-House midwives, you cannot be later than 35 weeks pregnant to be taken on as a patient.
